Discover Ripon
Ripon Theatre Festival
Beyond our permanent landmarks, Ripon is a vibrant hub for live performance. The city’s major annual draw is the Ripon Theatre Festival, which transforms the streets and historic spaces every July into a world-class stage for drama, music, and family street theatre, bringing a unique energy that delights local residents and visitors alike.
Eight Days of Live Performance in the Heart of the City
Each summer, for eight days and nights, Ripon becomes one of Yorkshire’s most exciting cultural destinations. The Ripon Theatre Festival fills the city’s unique open spaces, independent venues, pubs, cafés and historic landmarks with an extraordinary range of live performance — from big-top Shakespeare and Edinburgh Fringe hits to puppetry, cabaret, circus, storytelling and intimate new writing. Whether you’re a seasoned theatregoer or simply stumbling across a pop-up show in a courtyard, there’s something here to stop you in your tracks.
A Festival for Everyone
Ripon Theatre Festival prides itself on being genuinely inclusive. The programme caters to all ages and all tastes, with free outdoor performances and family-friendly street theatre sitting alongside ticketed professional productions. Community groups, regional artists and internationally recognised companies all share the same stages — making for a programme that feels both local and world-class in equal measure.
Unmissable Venues Across Ripon
Part of what makes the festival so special is where it takes place. Performances are staged across some of Ripon’s most distinctive settings, including:
2026: Five Years and Counting
2026 marks a landmark fifth anniversary for the festival, celebrated with one of the most ambitious programmes to date. Running 5–12 July 2026, this year’s edition welcomes Edinburgh Fringe hits including Down to Chance, One Man Poe and The Poetical Life of Philomena McGuinness, alongside new regional writing, works-in-progress inspired by Ripon’s own history, and a spectacular open-air finale — Romeo & Juliet performed by The Dukes Theatre Company.
