St John the Divine, Sharow – Heritage Open Days

| FreeAn opportunity to explore the graves and wildlife management of the graveyard
Using a map and I-spy sheet; experience bellringing up the tower and in the nave; view wonderful windows and embroidered vestments; finish with a cuppa and a slice of cake.
On arrival visitors will be handed a map, an I-spy sheet and information about a Natural Treasure Hunt. Then begins the discover of St John’s. An eco-church with an award winning graveyard full of biodiversity, fungi, moths, minibeast and wild flowers. An opportunity to create Environmental Art. The graveyard also includes interesting graves. The unique pyramid grave of Charles Piazzi Smyth and one of the founders of Taylor’s Tea, Llewellyn Taylor. Inside the church will be a display of fine embroidered vestments, showing the different festivals of the church year; wonderful renovated stained glass windows. Climb the tower steps, try your hand at bell ringing or stay in the nave and experience The Wombel, a replica bell that is linked to a computer. Refreshments will be available for all to enjoy. Carpark and toilets are available too.

Access
The church is wheelchair and buggy accessible via tarmac paths. The graveyard has some tarmac paths, but is not totally accessible due to rough uneven grass.

Everyone is welcome. Young and old, regardless of faith, background, ethnicity and ability. St John’s is an inclusive church.
