About this event

Professor James Palmer

Professor of Mediaeval History, University of St Andrews

In the third lecture Professor Palmer looks even farther afield, examining Wilfrid’s role in bringing Christianity to north-west Europe. He undertook missionary work here himself, and also supported the mission of Willibrord, Apostle of the Frisians, who had begun his religious career as a member of the Ripon monastic community under Wilfrid.

As we celebrate the 1350 anniversary of our crypt, built by St Wilfrid in 672, we also celebrate his role in the spread of Christianity in England and on the continent. And so, as part of this special year, we are taking the opportunity to explore Wilfrid’s national and international importance in a series of four talks which draw upon the latest research.

Join us to look outwards from Ripon to ‘Wilfrid’s World’. Register here: Eventbrite

Each of our speakers has researched and published on Wilfrid and his rich network of colleagues and associates, patrons and protégés. Come and discover more about them in this series of free lectures, and talk to the speakers afterwards over a glass of wine.

Entrance to the Autumn Lecture Series is free but a retiring collection will be taken. Donations to support the work of Ripon Cathedral are greatly appreciated.

Doors will open at 7pm. Refreshments will be served after the conclusion of the lecture.
