Ripon Marketplace

A medieval gathering place and focal point of this historic city

Ripon’s Market square has formed the centre of the city since the 13th Century. It was laid out by the Archbishop of York in 1215 AD and faces the Town Hall which was built in 1719. In the centre of the square is the Obelisk which is over 300 years old. Ripon bustling market runs here all day every Thursday. Ripon’s oldest tradition and popular attraction also takes place here as the Ripon Hornblower has ‘set the watch’ in the market square for over 800 years. The ‘watch’ is set by the hornblower sounding the ceremonial horn at each corner of the Obelisk every night at 9pm.
