There is an excellent range of shops and eateries, three interesting museums and a variety of attractions, including Ripon Racecourse. The city is perhaps best-known for its cathedral, an imposing structure with a history dating back to the 7th century. Just outside the city (under 4 miles), the atmospheric ruins of Fountains Abbey make for a wonderful day trip, whilst the Nidderdale AONB is just 11 miles away and the Yorkshire Dales 15 miles away providing a spectacular backdrop for enjoying relaxing walks.
