Rejoicing in Ripon: Celebrating another pan-tastic event in Ripon’s packed calendar

There was no room for clerical errors as Dean John Dobson and his cathedral colleagues found out this morning, when they hurtled along Kirkgate with pans in hands and pancakes ready to flip 🏃‍♂️🥞.

Egg-centric events such as the centuries‑old Shrove Tuesday tradition of running and tossing a pancake are simply made for the Cathedral City of the Dales ⛪, whose own home‑grown traditions – including the nightly setting of the watch by a member of the team of hornblowers 📯 – go back more than a thousand years.

Lilla Bathurst told Tim Flanagan of the Rejoicing in Ripon Blog:

“The annual pancake race is one of the many quirky and unique‑to‑Ripon events that make this gem of a city a must‑visit destination for people of all ages 💛.

“Over the summer we are looking forward to welcoming visitors from near and far 🚗🚶‍♀️ to the Spectacular St Wilfrid’s Day procession in honour of our patron Saint Wilfrid 🎉. We also have the thriving Theatre Festival, which reaches its fifth‑year milestone 🎭, and there’s a boost to our many heritage attractions with the reopening of the residents’ block at the Workhouse Museum, where a £3.3 million revamp is underway 🏛️.”
